On Using Birth Control in the Philippines

Writing a blog about a surprisingly-still-taboo topic in the Philippines, because well, in the words of a millennial actress, "Ano na, 2020 na!"

I first had my sexual encounter when I was 14 years young. Currently at my late 20's, I am now married to my first and last boyfriend (we were together for around 12 years before I got married). We are each other's firsts in all things romantic and sexual, so I guess we got lucky that we found our forever very early on.

While I'm not proud of being maharot at a very young age, I still try to be as open and as honest as possible. By doing so, I hope to somehow make a contribution into engaging people, especially adolescents, to be educated in the topic and to erase the stigma that comes with talking about sex. Before I continue, please note that I do not encourage promiscuity. What I do encourage is having open discussions that are based on facts and debunking myths, especially harmful ones.

To go straight to my experience, I won't belabor the obvious anymore how our country has one of the highest teenage pregnancy rates among the ASEAN countries or how the percentage of teenage pregnancy has doubled in the past years. If you want to learn about the most recent data and statistics on teenage pregnancies, click this link for UNFPA's Policy Brief on Eliminating Teenage Pregnancy in the Philippines. You can also check out this link to know why the Philippines has so many teen moms.

Okay, so now on to the main topic: birth controls.

The first birth control methods we used were condoms and the withdrawal method. We were so naïve and clueless because back then, mobile internet still costs a fortune and while we already have Google, googling wasn't a term yet. This is where teaching reproductive health in schools would have come in really handy but, well, Philippines. 😕

Just to give you an idea how naïve we were, take a look (and a laugh) at the following anecdotes:
  • We were so afraid to get pregnant while still being high school students that, on top of using condoms, we would also use withdrawal method.
  • When we thought that the condom might have broke, we got so nervous that right after having sex, we went straight to reading anything sex-related on the freaking encyclopedia! Naturally, we didn't find anything of use that would lessen our panic attack.
  • We would often have sex when I have my period solely because we thought doing so would not result in any pregnancy. We didn't use a condom or the withdrawal method while on period.
A year before we got married, I chanced upon other forms of birth control. It came as a surprise to me that there are actually quite a lot of available birth controls, including pills, IUD, and injectables among others. I didn't feel like pills are my thing, so I never used those. For some reason, I wanted to try injectables. After a bit of research and solicitation of advice from online forums like Reddit, I chanced upon Likhaan.

According to its website and Facebook page, "Likhaan is a non-government, non-profit organization founded in 1995 by a group of feminists, political activists, community women leaders and health workers. It was organized to respond to women’s expressed need for sexual and reproductive rights and health services."

In 2019, I had the chance to visit Likhaan on three occasions to take injectables. On my first visit, I drove to their branch in Tondo, Manila. The branch in Quezon City was nearer, but at the time, the Tondo branch was the nearest one that is open on Saturdays. The drive to Tondo was 1.5-hour long and if you're bringing a car, there are no nearby designated parking lots. From what I can remember, the road is so busy because this branch was very near the port, so expect numerous trucks plying the roads.

Once I got there, I mentioned my purpose (to get injectables) and they gave me a registration form to fill out. It's basically like the usual medical form asking for basic details about you, including your sex history. It will not take you more than 10 minutes to answer the form.

Afterwards, the clinic personnel interviewed me and asked things like if it's my first time to take injectables, how many sexual partners did I have, menstruation cycle, etc. They were all so professional and you will not feel like you are being judged. I was also given informational leaflets/brochures while waiting.

After waiting, I was then redirected to a smaller room (much like a doctor's office where s/he receives clients). I was asked to put write my name and address on a piece of index card. The card served as some sort of tracker that I had to bring each time I visited Likhaan. Then, the clinic personnel briefly explained to me how the injectables work and other things I should take note of like:
  • The injectable is effective for a period of 3 months. I can go back to take my next shot as early as 1 week before the expiration date.
  • If it's your first time to use the injectable, you have to wait for 10 days before engaging in unprotected sex. I was offered condoms that I can use during the 10-day wait but I declined since I won't be seeing my husband naman that much during that 10-day period.
  • Possible side effects were also discussed to me, such as headache and spotting.
After that, the clinic personnel then proceeded to ask me which arm to inject, I just randomly picked my left arm. I got lucky with my decision since that arm (injection site) would feel heavy and a bit painful for about 3-5 days. So I highly suggest that you choose the arm that you don't use for writing, or your non-dominant hand.

The injection was... truly painful. I took probably around 10-15 seconds since the shot needs to be emptied. The injection felt so deep, and I believe it was called subcutaneous injection (you can search what it means) and the content was called Depo Provera. After the injection, the clinic personnel will write some details on your index card like name of medicine, injection site (whether left or right arm), as well as the date for your next visit.

I was lucky because my side effects were pretty mild. I never had headaches, but I did have minor spotting which I experience a few weeks before the expiration of the shot. I also experienced weight gain and noticed a significant decrease in libido. Prior to taking the shots, I never used lubricants and didn't need foreplay before intercourse. However, since taking the shots, I sometimes find it difficult to get ready for intercourse and I would often need foreplay or use lubricants.

I took 3 shots during 2019 and stopped already since my husband and I plans to start a family soon. By the way, I didn't have my regular period when I had the shots, and my period came back 2-3 months after my 3rd/last shot expired. My period was regular naman na once it came back.

So... that's the story of my birth control experience! Do you have a story to tell as well? :)

My Personality According to Random BuzzFeed Quizzes

It's been a while since I last visited BuzzFeed. I'm guessing my last visit was a year before I quit Facebook. That's roughly around 2-3 years ago I think.

I was, unsurprisingly, bored yet again today so I opened YouTube to look for something I can waste my time on. On the recommendations, I saw this article from BuzzFeed, found it interesting and clicked on it. I was then redirected to the BuzzFeed website, scanned the article, then saw on top one tab called "trending quizzes".

Since I don't have anything better to do, out of whim, I clicked on that and randomly chose three quizzes to answer. Got these results:

1. My favorite season is winter.

Correctness: 90%-95%

I've never actually experienced winter since I live in an awfully-hot-year-round country. But nevertheless, I've always dreamed of experiencing the stillness and serenity of winter. It's the second best climate/season/weather (whatever) next to my top 1, which is rain. So, anyway here are my picks for this quiz: apple pie, bbq, curry, dumplings, eclair (I'm not familiar with any of the choices, I just went with the pastry), fish and chips, garlic bread, hot chocolate, ice cream, jam tarts (same explanation with eclairs), ketchup and fries, lasagna, meatballs and spaghetti (this was a tough one, I liked all the choices!), nachos, onion ring, pizza, quesadilla, raspberries (haven't eaten any of the choices, just went with what's familiar), soup, tacos, upside-down cake (same with raspberries), veggies, waffles, yolk, and zebra cake (don't know any of the choices, just chose the most appealing).

2. I belong in the Slytherin House.

The Harry Potter books have always been and will always be one of my favorites. At some point, it has even been one of my defining features (if somebody needs to know something about the series, they would often "consult" me). Since I had a major crush on Harry Potter, I would love to be on Gryffindor but I guess I'm okay with any, hehe.

3. I have exquisite taste.

Correctness: 50%

I actually think of myself as having basic taste! I usually go with the flow, or is not fond of trying out new tastes. It's actually my husband who introduced me to a lot of new things. If not for him, I would still be eating the same types and brands of food. However, I do have a preference for other types of things which I find really hard to deviate from, such as my love for being simple (I use the same set of clothes, I don't like buying new clothing pieces).

Back After A Long Hiatus

Photo by Angelina Kichukova on Unsplash

My last blog post was some 3 years ago. A lot has happened, obviously (not to mention that it's 2020). I never even saw myself going back to blogging! Anyway, I wanted to declutter my mind since everything has been so tough lately. I figured, blogging might help. So from here on, this blog will serve as a personal journal of some sorts, something I could do to let the steam off, to practice writing, and to document my life (however uneventful it might be).

It's been such a long while that I actually forgot most of Blogger's interface!

So yup, welcome to (the 3rd? 4th? 5th? rebirth of) my blog!

Name Three Things: Volume 2 (December 2015)

Well what do you know, my laziness kicked in again so I wasn't able to follow through the first volume of this monthly blog series slated for November -__- But on the brighter side, it didn't take me monthsss to update! Haha.

  1. I honestly want to stop eating pork, beef and chicken meat because I always feel guilty about eating them :( I just.. you know, I can't stop being tempted to eat meat every now and then. For the meantime, I try to lessen my meat consumption to only twice a week and I do try to search for meat sellers/providers that strictly follow animal-welfare standards.
  2. Whenever I have trouble sleeping (which is basically almost everyday), I sleep anywhere except on my bed. For at least 3 days, I would sleep on my parents' bed, on our sofa, or on our folding bed so that my bed feels "new" when I sleep on it again. This is a simple trick I do to fight my insomnia. If you're experiencing insomnia as well, you might want to try this trick because it works 90% of the time for me!
  3. I've stopped using drinking straws ever since I saw that video of a turtle who has a straw stuck in its nose. The turtle got infections from it and it really struck me how wastes produced by humans really DO contribute to other living things' misery :( Since then, I've vowed to stop using straws and have invited my family and closest friends to do same. Although this decision of mine looks pretty small to really make a change, I do hope that in the near future, the demand for non-reusable and non-biodegradable materials (like straws) will significantly decrease.
*This blog series is entitled as such because on this posts, I write three random things about me.

Dogs + Books

In times like this, I want to thank the Lord for giving man the ability to read and to make books and for giving us dogs. I don't know how I'll survive emotionally without both.

Name Three Things: Volume 1 (October 2015)

Yey! So I'm starting this blog label/tag called NAME THREE THINGS as a way for readers to get to know me better. I'll be updating this tag every once in a month. Here's to hoping that my readers will know me better and that I'll be diligent in updating this blog label! :)

  1. I don't like using pens with points bigger than 0.5. I'm not picky with pen brands, as long as the ballpoint is equal to or smaller than 0.5. My go-to pen would always be Faber Castell pens. They're pretty affordable (price per pen is less than Php 10) and they're among the rare species of pens which you can use until the ink is literally naghihingalo na. Like, you can really see that the ink is exhausted and they're not the "sensitive" type of pen (yung tipong malaglag mo lang, ayaw nang tuminta).
  2. All my books are meticulously plastic-wrapped by me. Meticulously because I always, always make sure that the plastic cover meet at a 90-degree angle before putting the adhesive tape. And no, I don't fold the plastic cover in such a way that it will form a triangular shape inside the book's cover (which, I assume, is the usual way of covering a book).
  3. Whenever I brush my teeth, I would always use drinking water for the last gargle. And I don't know why, how or when I've acquired this habit.

So This Is What It Feels Like

Among all the books in my collection, my Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince book is the most prized (being an avid HP fan). Not only is this the first gift that I got from my longtime boyfriend/SO, but this is also the first brand new HP book that I got (all the other HP books that I have are secondhand). I got this book as a Christmas gift on December 2006. Special as it is, I naturally take good care of it, to the point that it's still in mint condition despite it being 9 years old already.

Ever since having this book, I always pack it in my travelling bag whenever I went to out-of-town trips. I never tire of reading any HP books (I've read each book for at least 50 times, yep I'm that avid of a fan). So when I went to Roxas City (my dad's province), my HP book went with me too.

During one of my 14-day stay at an aunt's place, this happened. As I was reading my book, I felt the urge to pee, so I left my book on the sofa while I do my business. Walking back to the sofa, I saw my 4-year old niece holding what looked like a pen while holding the book. I stopped right there, a few feet away from the sofa, because I was pretty sure (and dead scared) what to expect. A young kid + a red pen + a prized book is a very deadly combination indeed.

So here's what I saw:

Seeing what happened to my poor book, I literally felt all these at the same time:

Don't worry about my niece though, haha (did nothing to her). I just got my book, went to my room, and soothed my crying heart. Huhu.

The Struggle Is Real

I keep telling myself that I'll start my planned diet and exercise regimen tomorrow, and that today will be the last day that I'll munch, overeat and binge on anything unhealthy. But the struggle is . . . deym real. I've got like, three notebooks (the legit, paper type), four different planners / fitness diaries (apps) saved on my smartphone plus a DIY scheduler : all for the sole purpose of helping me achieve my fitness goals. Been doing this for a whole year but the only thing that I've achieved so far, is to put on more weight :(((((((

I would not eat rice, meat, any junk/unhealthy food for a day, then tomorrow, BAM, I'd down three cups of white rice for just one meal, eat lotsa sticks of barbecued meat, and basically, just eat anything unhealthy.

 Why body, whyyyy?
:(

Ola! The It's-Been-A-While Blog Post

So, I've been out and away from the computer for a whole month -- yup, a whole month. Been to places, visiting relatives, enjoying this much-deserved and engrandeng vacation and now that I'm back in the metro, I'm promising myself to write MORE. Hihi. I know, I know, I've been promising myself to write more (not necessarily in this blog alone) but nah, my laziness kicks in (again and again).

What better way to jump start the coming new year (and to start fulfilling promises I've made) than to, of course, write a blog post, so here goes! Haha :)

Image Link

I'm no fan of listing my new year's resolution list, since well, I never had one year that I'm proud to say I've followed my resolution list. But hey, every new year is new hope! Haha. So I'm gonna share with you what's on my New Year's Resolution list. Feel free to share yours too!

  • Eat meat once a week.
  • Jog every day.
  • Blog more - like write a blog post at least twice a week.
  • Be friendlier to everyone! Smile more often, meet with friends, and join lakwatsa's haha.
  • Save, save, save.
  • Travel more (my dream escapades for this year: Batangas, Subic and Baguio)
  • Finish at least 10 novels.

The list is pretty short, don't you think? But this'll make the fulfilling part easier, yes? Haha. Here's to hoping that I'll be able to do my resolution list!

Happy New Year everyone! :)
Keep your fingers safe, kay?

Second Trip to UP Infirmary

For the past few days, I've been feeling really sick. I have this persistent cough that I have to hide (so uncomfortably lalong-lalo na when I'm not at home) and this irritating sipon going on for about 1 week na. Since I've got no time, (or probably because I'm just too lazy to make the trip to FEU-NRMF hospital) I went to the UP Infirmary for a medical check-up. During a quick research on the web, I've found out that UP faculty, staff and students are entitled to some free services at the UP Infirmary/Health Service. Libre naman eh, and it's very convenient for me since I can go there after class, so I did.

When I got there, there were very few people around. The last time I went there was during my freshman enrollment pa. I filled-up some forms, and the nurse at the lobby did a pretty quick interview and health evaluation. She took my blood pressure and body temperature. I then waited for my turn to see the attending doctor. I waited for about 15 minutes lang

The whole medical check-up process lasted less than 5 minutes lang ata eh. Haha. Basta, it was so bilis! She gave me my med prescription and on top of that, I had to go to the Emergency Room daily, for a week, for my nebulizer sessions 2-3 times a day.

I really can't afford to be sick at this month. I've used up my free cuts/absences allowable for a sem kasi huhu. Plus it's nearly December (our end of first semester in UP Diliman) so I'm expecting the heavier load of academic requirements. So, here's to hoping that I get rid of this cough and colds the soonest!

Red Brick Road of Teresa

And because it's almost November (the new "hell month" or "sabaw month" for UP students ever since the calendar shift), we're starting to write our graded essays that will undergo class workshops. For the first essay, we could write either about a place (travelogue) or a profile (any person except for ourselves). I chose to write a travelogue because I've been meaning to write about Teresa for the longest time. For people who love PUP Sta. Mesa / Teresa, please don't get me wrong for the first few paragraphs. Believe me, I've come to love PUP / Teresa as much as you do, even if I didn't study there. PUP is home to most of my closest high school buddies, and home to one of the most cheapest street food hubs in the Metro - and I absolutely LOVE street food :)

At the end of my essay, I've included some of my Creative Writing: Nonfiction classmates' comments. Feel free to comment on my essay too! Whether they be positive or negative, as long as they're written in a constructive way. :) I'll be surely needing those comments, plus a few suggestions would also be nice, since I'll be submitting a revision of this essay by December.

Red Brick Road of Teresa*

Once again, I found myself wondering what to do in my 6-hour long vacant period. A little planning might have helped but I've always believed that indecision at the last minute always pushes you to the best destinations. I was talking on the phone with one of my high school buddies when I mentioned by dilemma. "Why are you even asking?" she said. "Go to Teresa". At that time, Teresa seemed to be a not-so-good idea. Judging my travel time from UP to PUP Sta Mesa and vice versa, I already found myself saying "no" to the idea. Besides, I don't even know how to travel to Teresa.

But there I was, commuting and leaving the sanctuary that UP is for the noisy, crowded and dirty Teresa (as described by my high school buddies who study there). Teresa was seven LRT stations away from Katipunan, but I opted to ride their famous "patok" jeepneys. Riding the jeepney was easier because Teresa is located at the jeepneys' terminal, so no worries of getting lost there (all passengers will alight at the Teresa terminal, also known as Stop N Shop). Alighting at Teresa, I already wanted to get back to the jeepney for a ride back to UP (Katipunan). The place was just too loud and too crowded for me. It felt as if the noise was invading my very soul, probably because I was so accustomed to UP's more serene environment. Two minutes in Teresa, and the place literally made me feel like my senses were being assaulted.

"Once you're on the red brick road, you're on the right place", said my high school buddy. So I guess I'm not lost. This half-kilometer (my distance estimation) stretch of red brick road became famous for its student-on-a-tight-budget meals and merchandises sold t the lowest price possible. One of the first few things that you'll notice about Teresa is that it smells like something is always on the fry (using frying oil for the nth time), as if the whole community's diet all year round was anything deep-fried. The place also smelled and looked like it never once experienced rain: everything was dry and everywhere felt scorching hot.

There is almost no green life in view, save for the few potted plants in front of establishments to prevent vehicles from parking. The road is so crammed with a variety of vehicles: cars, pedicabs, trucks and motorcycles that one must have the skills of a public transportation driver to pass through this busy and crowded road. Not one place was uncommercialized. Every single place was utilized from small kiosks that sell halo-halos served all-year round and delicacies from different regions in the country (sisig, piaya, palitaw, biko, etc) to the Daniel Padilla stores (humorously labeled as such because ♫ ne seye ne eng lehet..) that sell school supplies, kikay kits, KPop/JPop items, stationery items, and whatever thing you could think of. Teresa is also home to calamares cuts as big as palm for Php 5, and isaws as long as unsharpened Mongol and as wide as the average smartphones for Php 5 (beat that Mang Larry).

As mentioned earlier, Teresa has noise levels that can rival that of Divisoria's during the Christmas season. There's the sound of the PNR train that passes by every 15 minutes or so. Curse words are heard so frequently that after an hour's stay in Teresa, you'll hear yourself saying one.

I've learned to love all of Teresa's "perfect imperfections" primarily because of the people in Teresa, They're as loud and as warm as the place itself, personalities I failed to find in the coldness and isolation of UP. Even on my first visit to Teresa, I found myself smiling and laughing at the conversations of a group of friends walking inches from me. I found myself being given an extra serving of rice and sabaw by the friendly Manang ("extra sabaw para kay ateng sabaw"). I found myself laughing and joking with the energetic and friendly siomai vendor ("dine-in o let it go?").

I found myself yearning for that 6-hour long vacant period, for a trip back to the red brick road of Teresa.

Stressed?

Have you ever been so stressed you made a poem? Well I did. Here goes:

Gusto kong mamundok
At tumira sa ilalim ng langit
At humuni na parang ibong naliligo sa banyo
At gumapang sa damuhan na parang asong bagong ligo
At magmuni-muni
Ng kahit anong hindi tungkol sa buhay
Kaso...
Ano ba ang "kahit ano"
Na hindi tungkol sa buhay?

So how bad is it? Hahaha :)

Kolours Balinese Brown

So out of the blue,  I recently got my hair dyed .... ♫ for the first time in forever ♫. Not sure if dyeing hairs the DIY way is a good idea, especially for a first-timer like me, but I did it anyway. It was pretty hard choosing a color, I was torn between Kolours' Toasted Anise and Balinese Brown shades but I opted for Balinese Brown na lang. Wala lang. Haha. Bought this kit for Php 250 from Mercury Drugstore.

Feeling professional with my hair-dyeing kit.

Each kit contains: 70 mL Color Developer, 2 After Treatment Conditioners, a pair of gloves, 50g Creme Colorant and the Instruction Leaflet. According to the info printed on the kit's box, this application is good for medium-length hair. I have a very, very thick hair, so I'm not quite sure kung pasok ba sa medium-length hair yung buhok ko. It's so thick that I never had a trip to the parlor without someone telling me "ang kapal naman ng buhok mo beh"

Anyare? May nagbago ba? Hahaha.

So, uhm, this is my before and after picture, taken at the same place (about 2.5 hours ang agwat ng picture when they were taken). The Before and After pictures naturally doesn't have any filter or effects. And yes, I noticed too that not much has changed (if there's any change at all). Huhu :( I need to stand under the sunlight para makita talaga yung kulay. Either I should have bought two kits of the same color, or chose a shade lighter.

New Do, ulit?!

Last Thursday, when I viewed my blog site using the ultra wide desktops in the Main Library, I noticed that my blog doesn't auto fit to different computer screen sizes. But aside from that, photos are either too streeeetched, or so shrunk, in short, ang sakit sa mata tignan :( I've promised myself that I'll try to fix my blog's look without changing its template but I've come to accept that that's an impossible thing for me to do, after about more than 5 hours of doing just that.

The super kaduper mega wide screen desktops at the Main Library. It doesn't have the usual CPU's (which usually looks like a rectangular box). I've placed the red ballpen for comparison. Haha.

So, with a super duper heavy heart, I've changed, na naman, my blog's template. This time, I've used Blogger's limited array of template selections. It doesn't look that bad naman right? :) I do sincerely hope that by using Blogger's template, my pictures and texts won't make a mess, no matter the computer's screen size.

What my old blog looked like.

Rob-Be-Lean

A quick post before I attend to my acad work:

I think it's very timely that I see this medyo patama word play of my name: Rob-be-lean. I've reached my heaviest weight this year, and uhmmm, I think I'm getting fatter and unhealthy by the minute. Huhuhu. Long vacant periods and the stone's throw away canteen from my college sure did contributed a lot to my achieving this round bodeeeh, hahaha.

So, I've been planning for weeks now how to get started on my #RobBeLeanChallenge. I badly need to be fit in time for my graduation photos (hopefully happening with God's grace), which will be taken before the year ends. I need to lose 12 kg, sheeet. Haha.

Here's my workout plan:
  • Everyday:
  1. Bike for 30 minutes
  2. Alternate walk-jog-run for 30 minutes
  • Every other day:
  1. Play badminton for at least 30 minutes
  2. Zumba for 30 minutes
Here's my diet plan:
  • I'm a self-confessed heavy and moody eater, so I'm trying to set realistic goals for myself haha. Here goes:
  1. Eat heavy breakfast anytime between 6:00 am - 9:00 am
  2. Eat lunch (no rice) anytime between 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
  3. Eat my merienda (fruits if possible) anytime between 3:30pm - 5:30 pm
That's it. I plan not to eat beyond 5:30 pm, because I usually sleep naman agad when I get home from school. I'll keep you updated every 18th of the succeeding months. I do hope I'll be able to follow this routine. Hihi!

Seems like the Oval is taunting me to jog, haha!

NEW LOOK (na naudlot)!

Howdy!

Since I'm really getting bored with my old (and never before changed since blog's birth) template, I attempted to change my blog's look..... but failed :(

This would have been how my blog's new template would look like:

But since the template, although free (which is really nice), is not customizable (not nice, huhu), I had to give it up. My blog sort of went haywire after uploading the template: I can't see my Nuffnang ad units and there were repetitive gadgets (3 Popular Posts, 2 Labels, etc).

I've tried to navigate my way around the template but failed to do so. I also tried finding other templates that not only suits my taste but can also be customized but found none *hindi lang siguro magaling ang Google Search skills ko haha. So, with a heavy heart, I've decided to just revert back to my old template.

*I've changed na lang my blog title from The Art of Getting There because it's so jeje and padrama ang effect. Haha. Di baaaaaaa? :)

If you have some great ideas on how to perk up my blog's overall look (I'm rooting for minimalist templates/themes), please do contact me! Please? Haha. I'm such a neophyte kasi when it comes to codes/editing/customizing that my blog's template is so raw, walang ka-edit edit haha.
